Electronics

Projects involving circuits, sensors, microcontrollers, MIDI hardware, or any logic‑driven physical mechanism. Covers both analog and digital builds, from simple LED gadgets to complex control systems.

MIDI to logic interface

This takes a MIDI signal through a standard DIN cable and outputs it to logic level signals that can be used by microprocessors etc to do fun stuff like displays or sounds.

Now I can make as many of these as I need!  It is also a component of the MIDI in/out/thru interface.

Topsy street organ

This is my street organ, based off of plans for the John Smith Topsy 3.  It's not pretty, but it works!
I started work on this contraption November 2022.  The construction has been an adventure in and of itself.

Double‑Barrel magnet blaster

This article documents a compact, mirrored, dual‑channel high‑side driver designed for 12 V pallet magnets using the IRF9520 P‑channel MOSFET. Each channel includes a gate network, flyback protection, indicator LED, and a manual test button. The design is optimized for clarity, repairability, and modularity.

MIDI in/thru interface

The circuit receives MIDI data from a panel‑mounted MIDI IN jack, isolates it through a 6N138 optocoupler, conditions the signal using a 74HC14 Schmitt inverter, and distributes four identical copies to panel‑mounted THRU jacks. A 7805 linear regulator provides a stable 5 V supply for all logic components. The MatrixPortal, Arduino, Raspberry PI, or other logic board receives the same cleaned MIDI signal for lyric display or other processing.
