This is where it all started! Looking at fog horns, train horns, basically forced membrane oscillation, I thought hey, what if I... and after a bunch of trial and error I came up with a fairly repeatable model for a horn-type sound thing! I made a couple of them with 2" and 3" PVC pipes, then I tried with 1" and 3/4" pipes and made a four-note cluster that sounds like a lovely antique luxury car horn, sort of like a fox hunt fanfare. Then I thought, "hey what if I made a tuned range of these things and played them with a keyboard?" I made a bunch of big bass horns and started building a bellows and wind chest, but that turned out to be a failure. Maybe I'll post about that at some point. After a while I found the world of street organs and thought that would make a good basis for this instrument. The next few years I learned lots and successfully made things that play music.
I'm not sure whether to resume the honk-horn route; seems this design is really sensitive to air pressure and needs constant tuning.
